What is play therapy?

Play therapy is a form of pediatric therapy focused on appealing to the innate non-verbal creative interests of children to enable the therapist to fully engage and work therapeutically with them.

It is a proven, developmentally relevant method of counselling young children who might not yet fully be able to work through complex issues. 

What does a play therapist do?

Play therapists observe and identify a childs issues such as emotional difficulties, unresolved trauma and inappropriate behaviour and using play time teach children new coping mechanisms and how to redirect inappropriate behaviors in creative directions that can improve their mental wellbeing and establish future pathways for success. 

Why should I study Play Therapy?

You don't have to be a clinical psychologist to learn play therapy (though it would certainly maximize your earning potential).  By studying a play therapy online course for example parents can learn advanced play therpy techniques and methologies to help them build deeper connections with their own children and provide meaningful ways at home to help develop their childs social and emotional skills.  Learning play therapy can also help a parent identify potential issues with their child simply by unobtrusively observing play time.  Another key tool for parents is being able to help their child develop coping mechanisms or even explain complex issues such as the loss of a family member or pet.
